Some unknown and interesting facts about Suhaag ,a big hit of 1979

Suhaag is a hindi film directed by Manmohan desai featuring Parveen baby, Rekha ,Amitabh bachchan,shashi kapoor ,Nirupa roy and amzad khan .It was a big hit of 1979. Here are some of the interesting facts about Suhaag .

  • The song tere rub ne banadi jodi was shot in london, in hyde park, even the car chase scene in the climax was shot in london.
  • Manmohan Desai accused Prakash Mehra of stealing Rekha’s tawaif character and incorporating it hushing in Muqaddar Ka Sikander. Suhaag was in production since 1977. Prakash Mehra got word about Rekha’s character and copied it .
  • This film was remade in Telugu as “Satyam Shivam” (1981), starring N.T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sridevi and Rati Agnihotri.
  • The background music used in the comedy scenes with Parveen Babi and Nirupa Roy was later used in Ganga Jamuna Saraswati.
  • Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor went unannounced to England to visit a theatre playing Suhaag. The idea was to surprise that audience and simply say a few words. When the crowd saw them they went berserk. The audience started to pull at them and call them with sheer excitement .Amitabh and Shashi were not expecting that type of reaction and had gone there without any security and only a couple of sponsors. it was at this moment Amitabh realized his massive fan following overseas.
  • The government was not granting Manmohan Desai permission to use a helicopter due to the Emergency. So the climax was shot in Singapore. Shashi Kapoor did his own stunts. He faced a almost life ending situation while performing the scene.
  • Manmohan Desai offered Parveen Babi the film but she declined saying she was going to Europe with Kabir Bedi and was not sure when she would return. Manmohan Desai told her he would wait for her no matter what. When Parveen Babi returned after 6 months, she asked Desai if the offer was still on the table. Desai told her yes and signed her for the film.
  • Suhaag’s chapal scene back ground music is reused in Desh Premee when Amitabh confronts some criminals who kidnap Hema in. taxi.
  • Parveen Babi played Rekha, s younger sister in the movie. In reality it was Parveen babi who was actually five years older than Rekha.
  • Boney M’s Disco hit “Daddy Cool” is played in the film. The song appears when Shashi Kapoor and Parveen Babi are in the nightclub.
  • ”Tere Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” had a Punjabi cover version in the album “Rabb Ne Bana Te Jori (Punjabi Wedding Songs)”. Singer was Bittu. This was in 1994.
  • Bollywood Brass Band did a instrumental version of “Teri Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.
  • Gino Soccio’s Disco song “Dancer” is played in the movie. It plays during the nigh club scene when Ranjeet drugs Parveen Babi.
  • Robert Hood song ” Dancer” sampled Gino Soccio song “Dancer” . This is the same song that plays during Shashi Kapoor raid scene.
  • Silvio Ecomo song “Uprising (2 Play Club mix) was a cover version of Gino Soccio song “Dancer”. This is the same song that played during Shashi Kapoor raid scene.
  • Terrence Parker song” Somethin’ Here” sampled Gino Soccio song “Dancer”. This is the same song that plays when Shashi Kapoor makes the raid in the night club.
  • G Flame and Mr. G song” Make Me High” sampled Gino Soccio song “Dancer”. This is the same song that plays when Shashi Kapoor makes the raid in the night club.
  • Bits & Pieces (Dynamite Mixers) Bits & Pieces III – Let’s Do It (Let’s Do It In The 80’s & Bits & Pieces III ) was a remix version of Gino Soccio song “Dancer”. This is the same song that played while Shashi Kapoor made the raid in the night club.
  • Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Nirupa Roy reunite in this movie after Deewaar (1975).
  • The song Tere Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was used in Aishwarya’s film Provoked.
  • Manmohan Desai stated that despite the film doing well he was not satisfied with the final product.
  • Mohammed Rafi sang all songs for Amitabh like in most Mdk films except Parvarish and AAA.
  • Rekha plays a Mujrewaali who keeps her identity secret from her younger sister played by Parveen Babi. She had played an identical role in Raaj Kumar’s Karmayogi released in 1978 where Reena Roy had played the younger sister.

  • Mohammad Rafi sang all songs for Amitabh like in most Manmohan Desai films.
  • Amjad Khan was just 2 years older to Amitabh and 2 years younger to Shashi yet he played their father.
  • The film was first announced in November 1975 under the banner of Suresh Desai and Associates . The film was going to be produced by Prakash Trehan,Suresh Desai,Subash Sharma. The story was written by K.A. Narayan. Rajesh Khanna, Amitbh Bachchan,Zeenat Aman and Pran were signed for the film. Then Suresh Desai had a falling out with his partner’s and left the project. The project went forward with Prakash Trehan, Rajinder Kumar Sharma, Naresh Sharma,Ramesh Sharma, Shakti Sharma,Subash Sharma as the new producer’s. The new banner’s name was now SHARMA CINE ASSOCIATES. Rajesh Khanna exited the film and was replaced by Shashi Kapoor. Zeenat Aman was replaced by Parveen Babi. Pran also exited the film The new story was written by Prayag Raj instead of K.A.Narayan.
  • Hey Naam Re Sabse Bada Tera Naam O Sheronwali This song was an adaptation of the Gujarati film song “Hey Ranglo” (“Sonbai Ni Chundadi”, 1976), composed by Avinash Vyas. “Sonbai Ni Chundadi” (1976) was dubbed in Hindi as “Chhoti Bahen” (1977). Even before “Sonbai Ni Chundadi” (1976), Avinash Vyas had recorded a non-film version of the song in the voice of Purushottam Upadhyay. Another Hindi film song, “Chogada Taara” (“Loveyatri – A Journey Of Love”, 2018), was based on the same.
  • Ek Daal Pe Do Phool Khile..This song was part of the film but not included in its audio release.
  • Mai Toh Beghar Hu song sees a drunk Parveen Babi dancing outside Mumbai’s newly opened cinema hall of that time Satyam Sundaram Sachinam.
  • The January 1980 edition of Stardust magazine stated that when Parveen Babi went to Europe with Kabir Bedi, there was no hope of her returning back to India. The only other actress who had a westernized image who could replace Parveen Babi was Simi Grewal. Manmohan Desai verbally spoke to Simi and told her the role was hers. But Parveen Babi returned back to work and Simi was bumped out of the film.
  • Parveen babi played Rekha, s younger sister in the movie. But in reality it was Parveen babi who was five years older than Rekha.
  • About 4 Producers had to produce this film. Also there were 4 Cinematographers who shot for this film.
  • Lyricist Ishtiaq Khan wrote the song “Meri Dooron Se Aayee Baraat” for the film Suhaag. There are reports of the song also being released on some early LP records,containing the song. When the film Kaala Patthar released, Ishtiaq Khan got the shock of his life. His song was inserted in Kaala Patthar and he wanted to know he was not informed about this. Yash Chopra did not deny the allegation but put the blame on Rajesh Roshan. Ishtiaq later found out it was his wife Pam Chopra who insisted the song be included in Kaala Patthar.
  • Manmohan Desai was very keen to change the title of Suhaag (1979) to Maa Kasam. But a film with the same title with Vinod Mehra, was being made, which made him retain the title Suhaag.
  • The rooftop scene where Amitabh and Shashi are discussing his fake killing was filmed in London.
  • The music at 0:15 and 4:00 from the song “Tere Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” from Suhaag, was used as inspiration for the music in the movie Khoon Aur Paani in the song “Kangana Mujhe Pehena” at 0:50.
