The trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi that was released today reveals a fuller picture of Alia Bhatt as a tough-talking madam. Bhatt, in her first collaboration with Bhansali, plays the titular heroine who begins as a sex worker and goes on to become the uncrowned queen of Mumbai’s red light district Kamathipura.
The trailer opens with Ajay Devgn’s voiceover, introducing Gangubai. We then get a glimpse of Alia’s character giving a fiery speech on what it’s like working at a brothel. Gangubai’s early life and her struggles are also shown in the trailer. Her fight for the rights of sex workers and their children have been documented.
Vijay Raaz plays the antagonist Raziabai, and the film also stars Ajay, Jim Sarbh among others.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is Alia’s first project with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The actress was supposed to work with the filmmaker in a film titled Inshallah, co-starring Salman Khan. However, the project got shelved.
